SOVA-YUKON Scholarship & SOVA-CANADA/US Scholarship

SOVA-YUKON SCHOLARSHIP

The Yukon School of Visual Arts (SOVA) offers two scholarships per year: one scholarship to a deserving applicant whose permanent residence is in the Yukon; and one scholarship to a deserving applicant whose permanent residence is in the rest of Canada or the USA. These awards acknowledge excellence in the area of visual arts and are intended to attract the most accomplished students from throughout the Yukon, Canada and the USA to SOVA’s foundation year program.

ELIGIBILITY

If you would like to be considered for the SOVA-Yukon Scholarship, please include the following materials with your application package.

  • Proof of Residency: Please submit a photocopy or digital scan of your Yukon Health Care Card.
  • 3rd Portfolio Assignment: Submit a 3rd portfolio assignment from the Portfolio Assignment List. Make sure it is labeled with your name. (see Portfolio Submission instructions for details).

If you would like to be considered for the SOVA-Canada/USA Scholarship, please include the following materials with your application package.

  • Proof of Residency: Please submit a photocopy or digital scan of a government issued identification (ie. passport, driver’s license, health card).
  • 3rd Portfolio Assignment: Submit a 3rd portfolio assignment from the Portfolio Assignment List. Make sure it is labeled with your name. (see Portfolio Submission instructions for details).

AWARD WINNER CONDITIONS

  • Register as a full-time student in the foundation year program at Yukon School of Visual Arts.
  • Maintain full-time student status throughout the Fall and Winter terms (ie. 4 course minimum).
  • Maintain a B average in the Fall and Winter terms.

PLEASE NOTE: The SOVA-Yukon & SOVA-Canada/USA Recruitment Scholarship deadlines have changed. The application deadline for both has been moved from May 1 to October 31 of the current school year. Furthermore the amounts for each scholarship have changed, and will now be determined by investment returns announced on October 1st of the current school year.

 

Geoey Shaw Bursary Fund (for Yukon First Nations applicants)

The Geoey Shaw Bursary is worth $500 and was established by former Yukon College President, Sally Webber, in memory of her late partner, Norman George Shaw. Geoey (pronounced “Joey”,) as he preferred to be called, spent many years working in First Nations and Inuit communities in Canada. He was especially committed to fostering Indigenous artists and traditional art forms. He believed that the intergenerational transfer of traditional art forms and techniques was essential to the billing and maintenance of healthy people and communities.

Eligible students must meet the following criteria:

  •  Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  • A current Yukon resident
  • Registered as a full-time student in Yukon School of Visual Arts (SOVA)
  • A member of a Yukon First Nation
  • Able to demonstrate financial need

Whitehorse Motors Visual Arts Award

Whitehorse Motors is the official Ford Dealership serving Whitehorse and area. They are locally owned and operated and are active sponsors and volunteers in the community.

As part of their commitment to Yukon and Yukoners, Whitehorse Motors would like to provide a $1,000 award to a Yukon student enrolled full-time in a visual arts program at Yukon College.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must:

• Be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
• Have been a Yukon resident for a minimum of two years as of the date of award application.
• Be registered as a full-time student in a visual arts or visual arts business program.
• Demonstrate financial need and indicate sources of funding that you receive.
• Provide a 200 word description of your goals and career plans, including a description of how your program of choice will help you meet these goals.

SELECTION CRITERIA

• The successful applicant will be chosen based on ability to meet stated criteria and demonstrated financial need.
• In the event of a tie, the goals and career plans letter will be used to make a final decision.
• If no eligible Yukon students, other applicants may be considered upon consultation with Whitehorse Motors.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

The application deadline for the Whitehorse Motors Visual Arts Award is January 31st of the current school year and the award will be presented by April 30th.

Financial Assistance

All Canadian Residents

Yukon SOVA is accredited through the Applied Arts Division of Yukon College, which is a Designated Educational Institution recognized by the Government of Canada. As such, students attending SOVA are eligible to take advantage of the Canada Student Loan Program,  RESPs and other programs administered by CanLearn.

Yukon Residents

Yukon residents attending the Yukon School of Visual Arts may be eligible for financial assistance under one of the following programs:

Student Training Allowance

Yukon Excellence Awards
The Yukon Foundation

Non-Yukon Residents

Provincial and Territorial Governments take an active role in providing financial assistance to post-secondary students on the basis of demonstrated financial need. Students normally apply for financial assistance through their province of residency.
