Yukon School of Visual Arts’ (SOVA) Foundation Year Program provides students with the opportunity to gain new skills and knowledge through an intensive period of examination, exploration and experimentation in both historic and contemporary visual art practices and mediums.
Students progress through three studio and two humanities courses in both the Fall and Winter terms. Studio and humanities courses are presented in consecutive units, which allow for the progressive development of fundamental skills and techniques, while addressing concepts and theories relevant to Western European and Aboriginal North American cultural practices.
The Foundation Year Program is devised to support, challenge, and substantiate the students’ abilities, while providing the knowledge and skills required for transfer to degree programs at selected post-secondary art institutions. Students who complete all ten Foundation Year courses will graduate with a certificate issued by Yukon College. Graduates with good grades and a strong portfolio will also be eligible to transfer directly into the second year of a BFA at SOVA-affiliated art schools across Canada. SOVA affiliates include : Emily Carr University of Art + Design (Vancouver), OCAD University (Toronto), NSCAD University (Halifax) and Alberta College of Art + Design (Calgary). For more information, see BFA Transfer Opportunities.
