HOW TO APPLY

The Yukon SOVA Foundation Year program is a full time university level program accredited by Yukon College but offered in partnership with the Dawson City Arts Society and the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in. The program resides in Dawson City, outside of the main campus of Yukon College in Whitehorse.

Academic Requirements

1. To be considered for admission to the Yukon School of Visual Arts Foundation Year program, the Yukon College Applied Arts Division requires applicants to meet criteria in one of the following categories:

  • Grade 12 academic graduation with a C average including Grade 12 English and Grade 11 Math.

  • Mature student status with acceptable scores on GED or CAT or a similar diagnostic test, obtained within the previous two years, and/or a suitable score on either College Writing Assessment test or LPI. Add a paragraph below this that reads "Note: The Language Proficiency Index (LPI) is offered several times per year and scores from the test determine a student's eligibility for registering in some Yukon College courses. Information is available by contacting the Yukon College Admissions office at 1-867-668-8710. 2. Students must also meet the English proficiency requirement of one of the following:

  • Suitable score on LPI (Language Proficiency Index)

  • ENGL 090 (minimum grade of B or 70%)

  • English 12 with a minimum 70%

Portfolio Requirements

In addition to the Academic Requirements, admission to the Yukon School of Visual Arts program requires applicants to submit a portfolio of their artwork, a written personal statement, and at least one letter of recommendation.

Residents of Canada and Alaska: please use this Application Form [PDF - 90 KB] Residents of Alaska and International applicants, use the International Application Form [PDF - 717KB]. Application forms are also available at any Yukon College campus, from the Admissions Office at the main (Ayamdigut) campus in Whitehorse, and from the SOVA Administration Office in Dawson, upon request.

Fill out the application form and include it in your application package, along with a $20 non-refundable registration fee. Please send cheque or money order payable to Yukon College. DO NOT SEND CASH.

Submission of an application does not guarantee admission to the Foundation Year program or the right to register in any program.

Step 2: Academic Transcripts and Assessments

Official transcripts from your high school and any post-secondary educational institutions you have attended are vital if your application is to receive consideration. Current transcripts should be included with your application. At your request, your high school will send final transcripts directly to Yukon College when they become available.

If you have not completed high school or if you graduated from a non-academic stream, you will be required to write the College placement assessment. For assistance, contact the SOVA Administration at 1-867-993-6390 or .

To ensure your application is given consideration, please send all required documentation as early as possible.

Step 3: Portfolio Requirements

In addition to the academic requirements, applicants to the Foundation Year program are required to submit a portfolio that includes: a statement of intent, a selection of artwork, three completed assignments, and a letter of recommendation. Step 5: Acceptance

After submitting an application package, each applicant will be issued a letter from the Yukon College Registrar acknowledging receipt of their package. Applicants will also be informed on whether they meet the academic requirements to enter the program. In the case where an applicant has not met the academic requirements, the Registrar may also request more information. Applicants who meet the academic requirements may be notified of their acceptance into the program conditional upon a review of the portfolio requirements. Applicants who have not received a response from the Registrar within two weeks should contact the Yukon College Admissions Office at 1-867-668-8710.

Once the Yukon College Registrar has determined that an applicant has met the academic requirements to enter the program, the recommendation is forwarded to the SOVA Admissions Committee. The Committee only reviews complete application packages, including academic and portfolio components, and application packages are reviewed in the order of receipt. The Committee is responsible for accepting or rejecting applications to the SOVA program. The SOVA Administration Office will notify applicants in writing of the results of the Committee's review. Acceptance of an application does not guarantee the applicant's admission into the SOVA program. The only way to guarantee a seat in the program is upon paying a $500 deposit fee by the June 15th deadline OR upon full payment of the tuition and registration fees. Student fees may be paid on a 'first-come first-served basis' starting when Yukon College opens registration for their programs (annually in June).

Documents submitted with your application become the property of Yukon College and will not be returned. Portfolio documents may be returned to applicants upon request via a prepaid Canada Post mailer included with the application package.
